Good range is a hallmark of all trims, but performance often comes at the cost of battery life. The adjustable one-pedal driving setting is perfectly dialed in, relegating the stop pedal to occasional use only. The Mach-E is marketed as a crossover but with only 5.7 inches of ground clearance and no off-road modes, so you would be wise to keep your Mach-E on paved roads. The GT Performance Edition with extended range ($6,000) delivers the best performance (zero to 60 mph in 3.5 seconds). You can add propulsion sounds to goose up an otherwise quiet performance run. “Unbridled Extend” is a GT exclusive that enables full power over a longer period of time, and modifies traction and stability control parameters. “Unbridled” mode is when you want to crush all other performance cars with the GT’s tire-ruining 480 horsepower and 634 pound-feet of torque. “Whisper” steps up the power release to allow for ease when passing or entering a highway on-ramp. “Engage” is just that, an engaging performance mode that offers great acceleration and preserves battery power. But no matter the Mach-E trim level, the drill is simple: Go to “Drive Modes” on the 15.5-inch center touchscreen and choose your preferred performance mode. While all Mach-E trims offer great performance, the GT with an optional ($6,000) GT Performance Edition Package extended range is the performance king. Heavily reliant on touchscreens, the Mach-E is surprisingly intuitive to control and offers a hands-free driving experience called BlueCruise that is continuously updated over-the-air. But when your Mach-E finally arrives, you will be treated to a safe and stylish CUV that’s an absolute blast to drive. No matter the trim, you’ll have to wait for your 2023 Mach-E as supply chain issues continue to slow dealer supply. With an improved overall standard safety package, the base Select trim is a good value even with its lower range. It’s distinctive and muscular looking in a segment dominated by Amoeba-shaped spaceships. Style-wise, the Mach-E carries similar good looks as its internal combustion muscle car sibling, while claiming its own modern electric characteristics in a bigger body. Even with its compact SUV footprint, there’s plenty of room in both rows to comfortably travel, and the rear and front trunk (“frunk”) spaces are compelling in that they fall only slightly behind the Model Y. Range and performance are good across all trims, with a low range bar of 224 miles for base Select and Premium trims with optional eAWD (electronic all-wheel drive), to California Route 1 models that offer the best range with up to 312 miles of range through its standard extended range battery and eAWD.
